Orongo – Easter Island

Located on the southwestern cliffs of Easter Island, Orongo overlooks the Pacific Ocean and the dramatic crater of Rano Kau. It is one of the island’s most significant ceremonial sites, closely connected to the Birdman (Tangata Manu) cult.

The ceremonial village
Orongo consists of low stone houses built to withstand strong coastal winds. The site was used during the annual Birdman competition, where representatives swam to the nearby islet Motu Nui to retrieve the first seabird egg. The winner granted spiritual authority to their clan leader for the year.
⚠️ Access to the ancient village is only permitted with an official guide.
This rule protects the fragile archaeological remains and petroglyphs.

Rano Kau crater
Rano Kau is a massive volcanic crater containing a freshwater lagoon covered with reeds and floating vegetation. The panoramic view from the rim is striking, contrasting the green crater interior with the deep blue ocean.
The crater viewpoint can be visited without a guide.
You can reach the overlook independently by car or on foot and enjoy the scenery freely.

Orongo offers a powerful combination of history, mythology, and dramatic landscapes — a key site to understand the spiritual heritage of Rapa Nui.
